Raiders of the Lost Cask Radio 4

I am grateful to be the reader for the upcoming, Raiders of the lost Cask, a new commission on BBC Radio 4 as part of #BookatBedtime written by Scottish Bengali writer, Abir Mukherjee, who began writing after winning a thriller writing competition set by The Daily Telegraph. Abir’s Wyndham and Banerjee series about a crime solving duo in British Calcutta has won him accolades and a wide audience.

Raiders of the Lost Cask however is set in the highlands of Scotland, and I play Sunita, who is leading a seemingly quiet life in the village of Glen Torrance by running the local post office. When a letter arrives on her doorstep, her husband’s shady past threatens to disrupt their lives. It spurs Sunita into an unwanted adventure which will change everything.

Girlies

In an unexpected blast from the past, Audible is launching Series 1 and 2 of GIRLIES on Halloween!co-written by Sudha Bhuchar and Shaheen Khan nearly 30 years ago, and it ran to 3 series.

We wrote it for ourselves to be in two of the lead roles and to address the lack of narratives fromcreatives like us! Inspired by real people, Girlies is a joyous exploration of friendship, family, work and womanhood and follows the hilarious ups and downs of five 30-something Asian women living in Wimbledon in the 1990s.

Tula, Vinny, Jabeen, Sonal and Samina are best friends since school and are united by the choices they made as adults to marry outside their communities. They meet for ‘Girlies’ nights when they laugh, cry and inevitably over share!

In exploring this ‘lived multiculturism’ we were ahead of the curve! Our efforts to get it on TV was knocked back as were our more recent pitches to write the women again in their fifties and now sixties! Here’s to the Audible launch and fresh interest!

Book Launch: A Rainbow For Amala

A Rainbow For Amala Book Launch FREE

Two years ago I was invited to be part of a new project called Green Shoots by a company called The Other Way Works. The creative team of John Sear, developer of collaborative games for public spaces, Katie Day, Fateha Begum (workshop facilitator) and myself worked together to create an interactive story book called A Rainbow for Amala. Copies of the book will be available to purchase on the day (£7.99).

Nafeesa cares about the earth and wishes that everyone else did too. But it’s hard being an environmental activist when even your best friend keeps forgetting about his pledges to walk to school and pick up litter. Join Nafeesa and her best friend Karim as they set out on a quest to befriend the quiet new girl Amala. What will give her back her smile? Use your phone or tablet to listen to their conversations, help them solve puzzles, crack codes and become part of their journey to uncover the truth.

A Rainbow for Amala was created with input from children at Regents Park Community Primary School in Small Heath, Birmingham.

From Fragments to Fiction: Writing workshop

Join us for this monologue and scene writing workshop, where Sudha Bhuchar will share her practice of using verbatim testimonies and everyday conversations as seeds of inspiration for works like Evening Conversations.

Through practical exercises, participants will experience how to access collective memory and spontaneous dialogue, shaping into short scenes and monologues.

There will also be space for conversation and a Q&A about Sudha’s other work, touching on how truthful, political and stirring work can start from these seemingly small beginnings – the extraordinary in the everyday.

Tickets range from £1 - £5.

Balti Kings at Retracing Our Footsteps

As part of Bhuchar Boulevard’s Retracing Our Footsteps project Tara theatre hosts a reading of Balti Kings by Sudha Bhuchar & Shaheen Khan on Wednesday 31 July between 12pm-2pm for their South Asian Play Reading Group.

Originally produced by Tamasha Theatre in 1999 and remounted in 2000, and directed by Kristine Landon-Smith this story is set in Birmingham’s Balti Land, where Indian restaurants ruthlessly compete for custom, curry wars rage with price slashing and chef poaching.

Restaurateur Yahsin Anwar is on the verge of being swallowed up by the mighty Karachi Karahi. To ward off this threat, his family plan a grand re-opening where you can pile your plate for under a fiver and ‘curryoke’ into the night. But the temperature in the kitchen soon rises, as the chef is faced with the challenge of producing 35 dishes in five hours, hampered by staff whose personal affairs are also hotting up…

The writing is excellent, sharply observant about the lives of the luckless wage-slaves in the kitchen. The acting has a superb understated naturalism…the smells of the Indian cooking as winningly authentic as the humanity of the characterisation.
